Nuweiba’s Colorful Canyon or Colored Canyon: Why Visit It

Have you heard of the Colorful Canyon, also called Nuweiba’s Colored Canyon in English? In this post, we’ll tell you exactly what it is, what type of travelers might be interested in visiting it, and how you could organize an excursion to this very special place, located in the Sinai Peninsula, very close to the Red Sea coast.

What is Nuweiba’s Colored Canyon

Nuweiba’s Colored Canyon is a very interesting geographical feature. It is a deep gorge carved into the sandstone rock. In ancient times, this area was covered by the waters of the Red Sea, but with the retreat of the coastline, it was exposed and at the mercy of erosion from rainwater, mainly.

It is located about 5 km in a straight line from the Red Sea coast, with the city of Nuweiba being the closest, about 12 km in a straight line but about 30 km by road. However, to reach the canyon, it is essential to travel in a 4×4 vehicle, as it is necessary to drive on sand tracks and then take a short hiking route.

Its name is “Colorful Canyon” or Colored Canyon because you can see different shades in the sandstone rock that forms it: from brown to red, through different shades of orange and gold. This is due to the composition of the rock itself, which has different proportions of iron oxide and magnesium. But in addition to its peculiar coloring, this canyon is striking for its vertical walls that reach 40 meters high in some places and its whimsical rock formations, carved by nature itself.

The total distance of this route does not exceed 3 km, although in reality the layout of the canyon has a length of about 800 meters.

An interesting visit for religious and fit tourists

Now, is a visit suitable for all types of tourists? The answer is “not exactly.” Walking through Nuweiba’s Colored Canyon is only recommended for people in good physical condition: although it is not a route of maximum difficulty and demand, in some sections it is advisable to take extreme precautions to avoid falls, as it is not equipped with trails, steps or railings.

In addition to tourists in good shape and passionate about geology and nature, the Nuweiba’s Colored Canyon route can be a good proposal for travelers most interested in religion, as it is a place closely related to the Exodus: according to the Bible, the Israelites wandered for 40 years through this desert, and it is popular belief that the prophet Moses was present here, before crossing the Red Sea and heading to the Promised Land.

How to organize the excursion

The Nuweiba’s Colored Canyon route can be integrated into a full day of excursion along this section of the Red Sea coast. For example, it could be done before or after visiting Pharaoh’s Island, which we talk about in this other post on our blog. From the pier that serves this islet, the distance to the canyon is just over 80 km. Therefore, it can be considered as a route to be completed on the way back, with the starting and returning point in any resort on the coast or in the city of Dahab, for example.

If that is your case and you want to visit this hidden corner of the Sinai Peninsula, you can suggest this possibility to us to integrate it in the best possible way into your tour of the area. We will provide everything necessary to enjoy it in safe and comfortable conditions, with a 4×4 vehicle and an accredited guide-monitor.
