Hurghada or Sharm el Sheikh: Which is better? Strengths of each

A question that many people who travel to Egypt ask themselves is: Hurghada or Sharm el Sheikh, which is better? In reality, choosing one or the other is totally subjective and each tourist will have their own opinion. For those of us who work in the sector, it would be like choosing between mom or dad. It is true that they have similarities, but also important differences. And that makes each one more suitable for certain profiles of travelers. Let’s see it in this post.

Similarities between Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh

Before going into the strengths of each, it is worth reviewing what unites them, that is, the characteristics they have in common and that, therefore, could convince the same type of traveler:

  • They are located on the shores of the Red Sea, so their beaches are bathed by warm and crystalline waters, enjoying pleasant temperatures in winter
  • They are relatively recent cities, without large archaeological sites from the Pharaonic era, which differentiates them from other tourist destinations in the country
  • Betting on diving and aquatic activities in general, with a wide variety of companies and professionals capable of teaching classes with safety and professionalism
  • Development of modern tourist infrastructures, such as large international airports and hotel-resorts with all services
  • Orientation to the profile of premium tourist, as can be seen from the type of shops, beauty centers and restaurants that are located in the areas most frequented by them

In What is Hurghada more Suitable?

Hurghada is located on the continental coast of the Red Sea, that is, the closest to the Nile Valley. That makes it more conducive to take road trips to other tourist destinations in the country, especially those located in Upper Egypt. In fact, the excursion to Luxor is one of the star activities for many tourists who stay in Hurghada: it is just over 300 km away, which is covered in less than 4 hours.

On the other hand, Hurghada has a certain chill-out air, visible in one of the most popular excursions: that of the Giftun Islands, which are very close to the coast of the city. Embarking there and spending the day in well-decorated beach bars, in a hammock with a refreshing drink in hand is a highly recommended experience by many.

On the other hand, the city of Hurghada is larger, with a greater atmosphere of local life, such as temporary markets. The grandiose Al Mina Mosque is a good example of the powerful local community that exists today.

In What is Sharm El Sheikh more Suitable?

For many, Sharm el Sheikh is a tourist destination with more possibilities for family leisure. In this sense, amusement parks such as Hollywood Sharm El Sheikh stand out, a theme park set with great hits of universal cinema.

For those looking for a higher level of scuba diving, Sharm el Sheikh is ideal because in its vicinity there are really spectacular (and difficult) dive sites. And in fact, the Ras Muhammad National Park is the jewel in the crown of the country in this regard.

That does not mean that excursions of interest cannot be made from Sharm el Sheikh. However, the most common has another character: the religious one, since this destination is located on the southern coast of the Sinai Peninsula, and from here you can travel by car to Mount Sinai and the Monastery of Saint Catherine, two places full of history and spirituality.

Finally, Sharm el Sheikh airport has a greater variety of flights with other national and international destinations, and that includes Cairo. Therefore, it seems a more suitable destination for those who wish to travel fleetingly to the capital and, in this way, get closer to visiting the Pyramids of Giza.
